Kanto is a humble environment, pastoric and working towards modernization. If Unova is 2010, Kanto is 1979, despite the fact that it was made in 1996. It feels tangible, there aren't a bunch of gadgets, or futuristic gym designs. It can be related to, and it is believable.
Johto actually feels even earlier in the game's timeline than Kanto. Ecruteak city's architecture seems so archaic. Almost every environment except for Goldenrod is extremely rural. Lots of forest environments, exploring in GSC felt so good.
Hoenn is paradise. So many beaches, jungle settings, a volcano, and a vast ocean. Exploration in Hoenn felt the best. I didn't mind all of the surfing when I originally played the game, because I was always excited for those islands with items, or discovering a new town. It has the largest overall variety of distinct environments.
Sinnoh is a mountain.
Unova is the future. No city compares to Castelia in terms of scale and immersion. The gym layouts are complex and amusing at times because they're so technologically advanced. The region seems to rely more on architecture and machinery, than natural environment to achieve its atmosphere.
