Hey I am a 32 year old male and a father of two
I used to play pokemon religiously in Gen 1/2 and after beating pokemon Emerald, I haven't played a single pokemon game since

I heard Pokemon X/Y is coming out, so I bought a 3DS and I want to play some games I missed out so far

So I'll ask you some questions:

Gen 5 vs Gen 4?
If so, Diamon or Pearl or Platinum / Black2 or White 2?

Platinum and the BW2

If you have money to spare you can also purchase BW (it's a prequel of BW2), but it's not strictly necessary

Pick up HGSS while you're at it

I would recommend going for HG/SS for that nostalgia factor, might make getting back into the game easier for you

All the games have their merits. Platinum (Avoid D/P because of its s l o w combat) will have a lot of Pokemon you're familiar with.
B/W only has all new Pokemon in it, as well as animated sprites in combat.
B/W2 is an actual sequel to B/W (Unlike Platinum to D/P or Emerald to R/S), and also includes older Pokemon. You don't necessarily have to play BW to enjoy BW2, since you'll be filled in on the story.

I strongly suggest checking out HeartGold and SoulSilver. You'll get the Gen 2 nostalgia and (in my opinion) the god damn prettiest pokemon game.
Play Platinum and then For Black2/White2 just check which exclusives you like best.

Start off with the Gen 4 games, particularly HGSS, and then next Gen get White and White 2.

Play with your kids too.

Well I played Gold AND Crystal on my phone a month ago because of boredom so if I play generation 2 again I might get bored (I want to see new pokemons and new moves)

A couple of gym leaders are different, but most of them are the same. The mcs and plot are different too.

I don't think there's much of a difference between b2 and w2 so it's up to you.

SOme gym leaders are different, the plot is different and the Unova region changes a lot between both games

Also, go with White 2. It has better exclusives, and IMO the aesthetic region version differences are better in my opinion

A few are switched out, mostly he same. B/W's story is much better than B/W2 in my opinion, but is also much easier due to free handouts and healers everywhere, more linear map as well.

I personally think you should, but if you don't feel like getting both, I think it'd be fine to go straight to BW2.

The only difference is some parts of the map, where White/White2 have more "nature-inspired areas", while Black/Black2 have more "technology-inspired" areas.

HGSS is an overhaul of GS. Maps slightly different, upgraded graphics... It's nothing like FRLG was to RBY. You will see new Pokemon definitely, and the Johto Dex got upgraded to include around 5 new Pokemon, Togekiss being one of them. There's a new facility, Pokeathlon, and instead of a Battle Tower you get a full fledged Battle Frontier.

It all depends on how interested you are in the story. BW1 is all about the main game and the story, with some post-game content. BW2's story is lacking in comparison, but it has a ton of post-game content and Pokemon availabilty.
