The music is awesome and the second battle against him in HGSS is great enough for me to think he's one of my favorites.

I went and defeated him the second time with a party of level 54 pokemon I used in-game, and had no revives left. It was incredibly hard and took a lot of tries. The only pokemon I had in a level higher than 54 was Dragonite, but it was useless because every single one of his pokemon could OHKO it before it could attack.

I can't being to understand why someone's least favorite champion would not be Iris.

To begin with, it's a little girl. You go and battle a bunch of tough trainers and shit and then you reach the final master of the league and what do you find? A little girl. Great.

Not only that but she's black. Why? Have you ever seen any other blacks in the pokemon world? Brock is only black in the anime, and Marshall would be a cool champion because he looks tough and shit, but she's a little girl and also black. I don't even browse /b/ but I hate forced multiculturalism.

The theme song is plain horrible and doesn't suit a champion battle. But guess the best part!
She uses dragons! Fuck originality.

Oh and let's not forget that retarded dress she wears in that battle.

Like seriously, am I the only one who got to the champion battle at the end of Emerald and went "who this fuck is this shmo?" And Iris was a non-factor. Completely worthless, overplayed, and even on my 2nd time facing the E4 I steamrolled her jungle ass.

The others were pretty good. I always assumed Lance's Dragonite was so low level because he was that great of a trainer.

Nope. Many people have asked this same question.
Having him be the Red of Emerald was pretty fun, though, even if he wasn't as challenging.

Lance is mid tier as a champ. He wields one of the mightiest types in the game and is appropriately regal for a champion.

Blue and Cynthia have more personality. Steve is really nice for going pretty much monotype in a more interesting way.

Wallace and Alder are a bit of a step down, but Wallace is interesting (albeit flamboyant) and Alder gives the impression of wise older guy.

No, problem with Cynthia's team is that it's fucking overpowered.
Spiritomb for no weaknesses.
Lucario for a ton of resistances and poison immunity.
Milotic with its bulky water type bullshit and Marvel Scale.
Roserade blasting the shit out of Ghosts, Fighting and Poison, Grass, and any Water/Rock/Ground-type that thought it'd scratch by.
Garchomp. 'Nuff said.
And don't even get me started on Gundam! Fucking overpowered piece of shit, it's worse than Garchomp.

Yeah, nah. That's only shown to affect wild Pokemon; it has no effect on any other trainers in the area, nor does it affect your Pokemon, and you're right at the center of where the signal is being directed when you fight the red Gyarados, so you're much more likely to be affected than anyone else.
Plus, Lance's Dragonite is a Dragonite before that part of the game anyway, as he uses it to Hyper Beam the shop owner when you first get there.

Steven's team had that "wow" factor for me. Like just when I think I'm turning the tide against him, he sends out METAGROSS and I'm like "OH FUCK, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT" and I proceed to get meteor mashed into oblivion. Quite a memorable experience back in the day.

Blue had a nice balanced team which I can appreciate from a competitive standpoint, but it didn't have that "wow" factor to it. After all, it's more or less the same team you've been fighting on and off throughout the game. But of course there's the surprise of finding out he's the champion. Speaking of which, who did he beat to become champion anyway?

Fuck Lance. Using a themed monotype team when you're the fucking champion? wut r u, casul?

I never understood how evolution works in the pokemon universe.
I realize in game it's based on levels, but that only seems to apply to the pc.
Maybe some trainers are better than others and that allows them to train them quicker without raising the level or something.
Another thing is the mystery of underleveled evolutions, like finding a level 16 raticate, or Lance's dragonites.
Has there ever been an explaination for these anomalies? Or are they just that, unexplained?

It's great that champions (typically) have very well-balanced teams, but I'd like to see this go a step further. I'd like to see teams that have the same level of strategy and synergy as the ones you see in competitive battles. Teams will well thought out strategies and such.

So we have Steven using ground, rock, and steel pokemon. All around that works for a pretty balanced team. But what if he went a step further and made his team a legit toxic-spikes-sandstorm stall team? What if he started with ttar and went from there?

Anyway, my least favorite is Wallace. They just took the fruity 8th gym leader and decided "lel, let's make him the champion now!"? He was insignificant and shouldn't have been there.

And wouldn't that mean the "E4" would keep growing if the way it works is you beat the top member and then you become the top member and all the others are pushed down a rank?

You guy A beats the E4 and becomes the champion. Now you have the E5
Then guy B beats the E5 and becomes the champion. Now you have the E6
Then guy C comes along... you get the idea.

Think about the types he has. For the one shown you have Charizard. Blastoise resist him and Rhydon should be able to hit with SE rockslide(again bad movesets) He has two Psychic types who at this point I think ahve no weaknesses because of the ghost type glitch. So if they were hitting with STAB moves would be right hard to stop. Pidgeot for some additional type coverage and Arcanine for fire support against your likely grass type. Only Exeggutor doesn't make sense because I think in that gen Eggbomb was a normal type move. Overall not bad for coverage.

Blue represents the typical scrub player. What does the typical scrub do? Only uses his starter and *maybe* one other pokemon and doesn't bother with any of the other ones.

In this case, you got Blastoise spamming powerful hydro pumps and blizzards. Then you have the lightning quick Alakazam with its "lol, nothing resists me or is strong against me" psychic type.

You know Blue steamrolled through the game and the E4 using those pokemon alone. The others are canon fodder filler.

That makes sense, but why is he still there after I keep kicking the champion's ass?

I honestly want a pokemon game where, after you become the champion, it actually FEELS like you're the champion. You go back to the E4 and they talk to you like you're their superior and ask if you want them to spar with you. There'd be a special mode where you chill out in the champion's room waiting around for challengers. Random trainers with really good pokemon and movesets would come challenge you whenever you want. And lastly, common folk would actually mention how you're the champion, or you'd see announcements about how there's a new champion or something.

But "Champion" is a title handed to the toughest trainer at the time. That trainer that defeats the Gym Leaders, the Elite 4, and if need be, the current Champion to earn their place at the top. But if that Champion doesn't want to sit on the throne and defend their title? It automatically goes to the next trainer to defeat the Elite 4.

That's just it, the type matchup is balanced but by Primus those movesets are laughable. Gen3 Blue fixed most of these mistakes.

What is the deal with the great postgame trainers? You know anybody in the White Treehollow or black tower could easily sweep the Elite 4. It would be interesting if other people were beating the elite 4 sometimes and could challenge you, or if they explained they just had no interest in going for championship, etc.

See, the way I see it. There's no such thing as underleveled pokemon. The levels we have in the game are an indicator of our "training" abilities as trainers. That's why some trainers have "underleveled" pokemon, they know how to train pokemon.

This also explains why there's trainers with level50 magikarps, they suck at training so their level requirement is higher.

I don't consider the 3 under-leveled Dragonites to be the epitome of Lance's hacking. That motherfucker had a Rock Slide Aerodactyl in G/S/C. That move is impossible for Aerodactyl to learn until 3rd gen. Of course Game Freak probably wasn't expecting us to notice that. They were probably expecting us to just OHKO it with thunderpunch or surf and be on our way. How do I know that Charizard didn't have something like Metal Claw, huh? For all we know he could have been hiding more hacks!
