Gen 2 because nostalgia, it was the first game that I owned, and I still play it from time to time, I find it aged well.
Gen 4 because my favorite pokemon come from this gen and I find it's the gen with the best starter overall.
Gen 5 was good, but the region is too urbanized for my taste.
Gen 3 was not bad, but it didn't grow on me, I can't say what but it lack a little something, the water route didn't help.
Gen 1 is the original but other than that, it doesn't have a lot of good point and it didn't age well .And although it was the first game I played, it was my cousin who lent me the game and he took it back just after I finished the game.

But it's just my opinion.

The biggest gripe with Gen 3, for me, was the music. It was so dull compared to the rest of the series. Dive and Secret Bases could've been better but they were fun at the time. Everything else about the game was great, used to seriously look forward to it getting a remake, a little less so now after seeing how shoddy the 3D graphics look in X/Y.

I appreciate 4 for what I attempted to do, but it didn't quite get there. It tried to make the story bigger and better, it succeeded on some levels but...ehh, it just didn't click with me though. Locales were bland and boring for the most part, though almost all the Gym Leaders were cool atleast. Arceus was the only decent looking legendary of the entire bunch.

Imo, Platinum was the single best pokemon game, HG/SS, emerald, and BW2 were also very nice.

Gen 1 and 2 games provide a sense of nostalgia and have a much different feel than later Pokemon games, but just simply weren't as good. Especially gen 1. FR/LG is almost universally more enjoyable.

R/S, D/P, and B/W were kind of lackluster, though. The later games in each generation made up for it.
