Kirlia is called Kirlia in honor of Semyon Kirlian, the inventor of the Kirlian photography, which captures representations of coronal electric discharges from objects and is said to be useful to identify and measure the aura. The aura, in the context of living things, is a property studied by psychics, supposedly being, among other things, a reflection of emotion in humans. Since psychics use Kirlian photography to read emotions, the Emotion Pokémon is fittingly called Kirlia.
