So, I'm about to finish up watching DP. Honestly, it got better and better and the end of Sinnoh League Victors is good so far.

Now my question to you /vp/ is about BW. How much of a step down is it from DP? Is it even watchable? What's the major differences from DP excluding new region, new pokemon and people, etc.?

It's steady. I only recommend watching the Meloetta arc, then skip past the filler to the league, then catch up from there. That's all that's really worth watching.

It was a chore watching DP after the Wallace cup. Dawn's character turned to shit, her rivals remained shit (at least compared to Drew, Harley, Gary and Paul), the writers tried to see how mind-numbingly irritating they could make Piplup for merchandising purposes, Brock continued his position as background furniture, and they tried to shove a unbelievable amount of plot development between the seventh and eighth gym, resulting in more than a year break from the main story. Team Galactic and bits of Ash/Paul were the only redeeming plot points in my eyes.

BW is better than it nearly by default, if only because it isn't going to last four years.

BW turned into trash after that cancelled episode from the earthquake. The only episodes after that which are decent are the tournament arcs. I liked D/P better overall.

Best Wishes is the only season of Pokemon I've actively kept up with and enjoyed since the first half of Advanced Generation. The filler episodes are pretty dull, though, so I'd just skip 'em. The Meloetta and N arcs are the most decent.

I would definitely recommend watching subs, though. The dialog in the dub is even stiffer than the English version of DP, and I personally don't like the translation choices.

Personally I think DP is good, but Holy Moses is it a chore to sit through. Proof that no matter how much you try to make it good and develop the plot, if it lasts too long it will inevitably be shit.

When DP came along, the writers pretty much didn't give a shit about Brock as the show was pretty much about Ash and Dawn.

Dawn was the reason why I watched the entire DP series anyway, because she did feel realistic at first but then got second place at the GF which is unrealistic. I still like her anyway

That said, I felt that BW has:

1) Shittier rivals
2) Too many one-sided battles and retarded matchup choices

But:

1) Better criminal organizations
2) Better trio chemistry

Overall, it did feel like a downgrade from DP. But BW was intended to be a Kanto-like reboot series but it didn't feel quite like OS to me.

While DP is more about battles and a thin "plot", with some good character developmente for pokemon standards, BW is more episodic, has more focus in comedy and characte interactions.

The only bad thing about BW is that the writers seem to have ADHD, changing the focus of the series every time (what is fun, because the problem with DP is that it dragged things for way too long).

Anyway, it's enjoyable if you don't expect much and ignore the underwhelming league.

BW has a little bit of a different feel to it, for me at least. TR is shittery for a while there and with no contests the pacing feels different. I really like how much they focus on the Pokemon though, Oshawott gets quite a few episodes all to himself and that's nice. I'm enjoying it, OP, give it a try.
