Just Ash in general, however, I really miss Ash's "sass" from the original series. If they combined that with Ash's maturity from DP and complimented that into BW, I'd happily say BW Ash.

Dont care much for ash, but I liked the original. Theres a slight stylization that they had where the characters had slightly bigger hands/heads which I thought really kept a cartoony charm and made their expressions easier to read

He's my least favorite character in the current series, even though I really liked him back in the day. What I hate the most about current Ash is basically how polite and understanding he is, at the same time he's always happy and excited about everything. Basically:
Kanto Ash: was the typical dumb yet heroic shounen main character. I liked how sassy he was. He matured greatly during OI and Johto.

Hoenn Ash: was kind of a jerk in the beggining, but soon became just like he was in Johto, although he was a bit stale.

Sinnoh Ash: was boring as fuck. Yeah, I know he finally starting using some strategy, but holy shit he almost never showed any emotion.

BW Ash: was exactly what Sinnoh Ash wasn't: dumb at battles and SUPER EXCITED ADHD all the time. It feels like he's just there like a talking merchandising tool, it sucks.

tl;dr
Ash (personality-wise) is getting shittier and shittier every year

As for Ash, I like him. Sure he's an idiot, doesn't know how to pokemon most of the time, and thinks bodyslam is the answer to every obstacle, but he's not that bad. He's a brave guy who will do anything at any cost for the ones he cares for. He might not be a very good trainer, but he seems to be a good friend at least.

I like Ash very much. He's not the best at battling, but let's face it the show would be boring as fuck if he had no faults. I like watching him progress and he certainly loves his Pokemon which is super cute. Every time he refers to them as his family...my heart breaks.

There's overlap between the Ashs barring Unova Ash.

If anyone payed close attention, Ash cooling down in Johto led to his more leadership-esque personality in Hoenn. Hoenn to Battle Frontier caused Ash to gain a bit more insight on battling, causing him to have better strategies in Sinnoh, as evident in the Lily of the Valley Conference.

... And Unova Ash just threw it out the window.
Funny, because a Japanese friend of mine, tries to resolve this with "he's.. just holding back", but I don't buy it.

As for clothing, I find AG Ash to be very form fitting for him, as a character.

DP is a close second, but I personally don't think Ash can rock the black vest without a much more mature demeanor than what he exemplified in Sinnoh.

Unova and Kan/Joh are bottom tier for me, although Unova wins out simply because Ash looked like a retard in his original clothing.

I wasn't really a fan of the 'hat turning' thing either. When AG/DP Ash did it, it had much more meaning to it, due to how seldom of an occurrence it was, and it usually was saving a loved one like May in Movie 9, or Pikachu in late Hoenn. He also did it in important battles such as the one with Tobias in Sinnoh.

I liked each "version" of him progressively more until they got to Unova, where the writers shat on his character. Even though the continuity in the anime is loose at best, it seemed like he was gaining a bit of experience and maturity over the years... until the BW series. Then they ruined him, in both character and appearance.

Though that's mainly because I'd rather not see them waste an episode with the loss and another episode with the rematch. Really they should start with a new protag, but that's not going to happen.

Dissapointed, but not mad anymore, it's sad that the anime is wasted being just another 22min advert. I mean, even Transformers has grown out of that.

I mean sure, that's cute and all, but in Indigo League he had an edge that was sorely lacking in later seasons. He was a clueless, brash, naive idiot to be sure, but he was passionate and you could tell that he had the guts to become the champion. He was believable.

At a certain point his character just sort of hit a dead-end, where his naivete got old and his boastfulness was traded out for dull pure enthusiasm

Just to compare, look at the difference between him catching Caterpie way back in the beginning and catching Tepig.

in my opinion it seems like the original voice actors actually put themselves into the script, and voiced it with more emotion. The newer VA's just sound like they're reading straight off the script, not investing any emotion in it.

The Hoenn arc in general saw the deepest character development for Ash, Team Rocket and Brock. Too bad they threw all that development out the window at the start of the Sinnoh arc.

I stopped watching the anime mid-Sinnoh and the only reason I made it that long was they had a marathon on Cartoon Network here and I watched it with friends.

After 16 years, I've graduated from public school, gotten through college, and have started my PhD.
In this time, I've watched a lot of Pokemon.

After 16 years, I feel Ash's character has stunted. When I went through school (up through DP) I kinda saw myself growing up with him. Stupid, I know. At the same time, though, I learned to think before I speak, to assess situations, and plan movements better. At this time we watched Ash change from a child (dragging Pikachu by clothesline) to a competent trainer.

This past summer, though, I turned on the show to see Ash in BW, and really found him to be foolish. His moves don't make sense, his actions seem off, and his voice seems stale. I don't want to call him a "Little kid" - Iris does that enough and pisses me off to no end - but he isn't the same guy.
