I normally decide gender based on looks

For example I used a Mienshao. It looked feminine, so I got a feminine Mienfoo. I also used a Ferrothorn. He decided he looks more male than female, so I got a male.

I go with the rarer versions of the sex all the time.
For example Gothita has only a 25% chance of being male, so all the females are trashed.

I don't care what gender it is. The only times I ever did was for whatever reason, female Aron often have Rock Head, and I preferred that ability so I could unleash Double Edge. I also insisted on a female Mareep to name her Tesla.

I don't care about gender, unless I have a really good nickname planned and to use it the pokémon must be of a specific gender, OR if the pokémon clearly looks like a male or female (Though this only applies to human-like pokémon, since you usually can't tell the gender of most animals).
I think that would be a little disturbing training a female Machoke or a male Gardevoir.

I generally don't give a shit about gender or gender differences. The only one that I prefer one gender over the other is Steelix, the male's two jaw jaggies look a lot better than the one jaw jaggy and gap that the female has.
