spikes were a minor inconvenience in the past that basically meant wasting 3 turns to do 1/4 damage, which could be undone anyway
toxic spikes has even more counters
however, stealth rock has only one counter, can potentially do 50% damage, 25% if you're only x2 weak, takes 1 turn to set up, and has sent nearly every good ice, fire, or bug type to UU or lower
I mean, I know stealth rock isn't the ONLY reason why things like charizard are in NU, but damn
