A megacompany wouldn't not do something because they don't like the effort--only if it isn't worth the effort. And some things would just be too big of a change. Retconning them into one would literally be taking out an entire pokemon species. The original 151 would become 150. That's too big of a change for GF's standards.

That's like saying "the only reason the designs back then are simpler is because of hardware limitations. Therefore, they actually look more complex/should be retconned to look more complex."
If they did it over, yes, they'd be one species with gender differences. But in ANY case, they aren't, and that's just they way it is.
