Are you really that surprised? Having the trainers visible would increase the amount they have to render per frame.

This new way (Trainer cut in -> first person pokeball toss) is a faster way of doing things.

They probably tried to make the bike using the engine, but it either looked weird or glitched.
Actually, now that I think about it, in 3D getting on the bike like the old games (just appearing on it) would look weird.
Rollerblades probably just look less awkward.

Biking in 3D would require a large 3D model, would require much larger locations, and whole host of other things.

The skates are a nice concession that increases mobility while not requiring extra rendering resources.

It could be possible that at first you're able to run, but then you're given the rollerblades to go faster but not as fast as a bike. Not entirely impossible, but it is kind of unreasonable.

This. I like rollerblades Never learned to ride a bike. I lived in a small town in a mountain and the entire thing was inclined and I was scared as fuck.

Thinking about it a little more I can see why they'd ditch the bike. The way it behaves (instant acceleration, damn near uncontrollable, another sprite/model) would be kind of hard to pull off. That only worked due to the top-down nature of the original games.

Knowinf GF, they'd probably add a horrendously long animation for getting on and off the bike.
I'm confident that Gogoat only accessible in the one city is a test for using riding Pokemon in future games, like Amity Square was a test in D/P/Pt for following Pokemon in HG/SS

I never overcame my fear. Plus, given how shitty is the city where I live now having a bike is a death sentence: more often than not people get killed for resisting to have their bikes stolen.

Actually, the only ocassions I ride a bike is in the Pokemon games.
