I chose Treeko or Torchic every time I played R/S and I beat the E4 with them but it wasn't til Emerald that I decided to choose Mudkip for a change and it felt like a revelation, just keep him away from Grass types (as I'd do with any Water type) but I had one thing less to worry about.
It was great and I love his design, the colors just feel right.
