I'd be pissed, but I think it might be a little more fun in the long run. We'd have to actually search out for all of the old mons, which if the game is set-up well, will be fun.

Waiting for the old event legendaries will be a pain in the ass, but at least we'll get them in one gen instead of having to deal with transferring everything.

They did just "decide to not make cross gen trading available" in Gen III you dolt, it just couldn't be done because the code was completely overhauled and the way pokemon's data was structured was totally different.

That's not the case so there is literally no reason for GF to alienate so many people that way.

It looks to be likely.
I'm not sure why they did it with gen III but I'm guessing it has something to do with shinies being easy to obtain in gen II.
Having said that, gen IV has multiple gift shinies AND the shiny charm so that's making me think they won't make trading possible.
But on the other hand.. it'd be fucking impossible to complete the dex without trading down.
Not sure if I agree with this or not

Yeah, but Hidden Power started existing in Gen II.
Since Hidden Power's type is based on IVs, the existence of a new type would warrant a change in either HP's calculation or the IV system.

Shiny was only part of it. The conditions for getting shiny in-gen-2-case are still around since they're completely related to IV's. The problem is that the IV's were overhauled along with the stored rewards for past Pokemon battle victories for each Pokemon into the modern system of EV's. There wasn't a good enough way to transfer the Pokemon,both with the actual data and possibly with the hardware, so a large amount of Gen 3 was dedicated to getting Pokemon from the past gens.

I would hate it, not because of all of the lost work, but because GF would have to either cut out selective Pokemon from their games (rather than just abandon them all, we say Magikarp in the trailers for X/Y), or introduce a fuck ton of side games/services to get the rest of the Pokemon that would be a total pain in the ass. Gen 3 had FR/LG and Colo/XD, I don't want to imagine what they would do to compensate for the same thing plus 3 other generations.

Forgot to clarify that shininess is no longer determined by IV's, but the combinations of IV's that would allow shininess in Gen 2 can still exist.

I would greatly enjoy it, for two seperate reasons:

1. In RSE, completing the Pokedex was a bitch. You had to start out entirely from scratch, and Pokemon only were on certain games. It took genuine effort to getting all of them. In later generations, it's become as simple as importing the previous generation then only one or two games; it isn't some new grand challenge for each one.

2. Something I absolutely hate is how people always try to send their favorites with them on every fucking game in the entire franchise. No, that is not how the game is supposed to work: they put in the new pokemon for you to EXPERIMENT and USE, not to just completely drop them for the ones you've been circlejerking about for years. Cutting off backwards compatability would eliminate this to some degree, which I would be a fan of.

Of course, they'd have to go back and make sure that the relevant event-onlies from the past were re-implemented at some point (please don't take away extremespeed zigzagoon) but that's vastly preferrable to the same pokes still running around.

Instead of trying to filter out hackers they should just revamp IVs and Hidden Power so hackers don't have a stupid advantage over legitimate players who have to essentially roll dice for hours just to get a good combination. Cutting off backwards compatibility just because of hackers is punishing legit players more than hackers.

As much as I'd love to trade in all my bros from past games, with pokegen and pokecheck around, it'll be very easy to send out non-real pokemon. It'd be boring again, with maxed IV/EV pokemon.

Unless the transfer mechanic somehow undoes that pokecheck'd Pokemon (Which I can't see happening, because these Pokemon are registered as completely legitimate in the game code) then I'd be fine with it.

But I would really rather not being able to trade over to the new games.

Do any current 3DS games offer cross-playability with DS games? if they do, then X/Y probably will. They tend to try their best. If they can't, then I probably won't mind. Not like anyone has friends or anything in this day and age and the only problem I can see with it is the fact that they'll probably release mroe companion games. Having to work with so many nowadays is really annoying.

Really, they've got to at some point. I didn't even notice with Gen III and I'll enjoy it either way.

I'd go ballistic. I've finally completed my National Pokédex with the Deoxys event, starting all over now would fell like a kick in the balls. Not to mention that while gen I-II were my childhood, gens III-IV were my teens and gen V was early adulthood. They're the gens where I started to get my shit together and enjoy the games to their fullest. I have a lot more and clearer memories to the guys in those gens, losing them would hurt a lot more.
