Why can't the "get from a friend" option be a valid option for all events? As far as I know, the only events that could actually be given on to friends were some gen III events that could be gained through data mixing, and the Japan-only Rotom Key event. But it'd be pretty cool if you could just get a missed event from a friend and it would probably encourage real life interaction among players. Plus, it's not like you'd be able to farm event exclusives this way: even if you could pass on a Wonder Card once every time you'd received it (which Game Freak could easily solve by making events received from friends non-further transferable), you'd have to have two game cartridges which you'd continuously erase one after the other to keep exchanging the Card.
