And no you're right, Volcarona isn't completely reliant on the Sun to be good: it's completely reliant on Quiver Dance. Ever seen a Volcarona without that move? You didn't.
You are trying to avoid the epicenter of Volcarona's sucess but it all boils downs to this: Volcarona received an OP set-up move and managed to get by with it, just like Cloyster and Shell Smash.
Take that away and Volcarona becomes a run-of-the-mile NU. Give it to Charizard and he'd do wonders.
So don't try to throw sand into my eyes, because you know damn well Volcarona just by itself wouldn't be solid enough to thrive
