>>12476930I'd disagree, respectfully. Blue was the only rival who became something - who strengthened himself each time you beat him to become "the most powerful trainer in the world." The only reason it was "You suck even though I lost, smell you later" was because the way the game is set up. Losing a battle cost you half your money and not advance the story. In my opinion, out of all 5 gens, Blue is the best rival.
Silver steals a pokemon only to see love is the answer.
Wally only fights you because you helped him - you're more his rival than he yours.
Brendan/May simply disappear after Lillycove.
Barry(?, I forgot his name) is a strong trainer and can be fun, but doesn't really interest me.
Cheren (Sasuke, Castform, etc) is pretty cool, but his story didn't stick with me - explains to me why he isn't a rival in my eyes. Bianca had a better arc, in my opinion, as the kid whose parents were terrified to see go.
Lastly, there's this new guy whose name escapes me right now. Although I forgot his canon name, the story surrounding him (Plasma stole his sister's Purrloin) really drives his character. It gives him a reason for being so angsty and hot-headed in a way you haven't seen.
So, if you TL:DR, Blue and BW2 rivals are best.
