I am breeding Druddigon, trying to get 31's in both Attack and Speed. Both parents are holding Power Items, but the babies each only have a 31 in one of the two stats. Am I doing something wrong? Why can't he have both?

Only one Power item works at a time, I believe.

For the other parent, use something like an Everstone to get the correct nature. Natures matter more than flawless IVs.

In breeding my last pokémon, I got two 31's using the same method. I don't recall ever reading that only one power item works at once, but I can't explain my current issue, either.

Was my previous one just sheer luck, getting two 31's on the stats I wanted? That seems insane, but I'm very new to anything having to do with IV's.

If both parents are holding different Power items, it's a 50/50 chance either one will be passed, and the other two inherited IVs will be determined from the other four stats. You likely got lucky with a random 31 in that stat.

Honestly, don't bother with speed on Druddigon. Get a max Attack IV, then build up his HP EVs or his defensive EVs after you max his Attack EVs. A bulky Druddigon can actually take a lot of abuse and return it blow for blow.

Basically how IV inheritance works is 3 random IVs are chosen from the two parents.

A power item on one of the parents will guarantee one of the IVs, but two power items won't guarantee two IVs 100% of the time.

But with sheer luck you can get the IVs you want.

If so, then, for example, the male passed his 31 attack through the power item, then just by chance the female passed her 31 speed by normal IV genetics, not her own power item.

Inheriting IVs works like this:

Normally, there are three IVs passed from the parents: one from the father, one from the mother, and one from either. Which ones are totally random. The other three IVs are randomly generated.

Holding a Power item guarantees that the IV will be passed. If both parents are holding different Power items, it's a 50% chance one or the other will be passed, and the other two IVs will be passed from stats that aren't the two IVs with Power items.

It's pretty simple, really.

Almost right but the other power item stat can still be passed on through the normal IV inheritance rules, it isn't excluded like you say.

Such as in OP's previous experiences.
