Can we get a "first shiny encounter" thread going on here? I'll start us off.

So, i was on Ruby, already beaten the game, on the hunt for Latios, surfing somewhere. Wingull shows up, with a green stripe instead of blue. I thought nothing of it, so I fled, and kept on my search for Latios. I saw that Wingull over and over and over again, so I eventually just caught him and let him rot in my PC until whenever. I had no idea what the green stripe meant. I looked it up a few weeks after, and I was freaking out when I found out just how rare shinies are.
