The Californians of the 19th century set up pit fights with grizzlies and bulls. The grizzlies, using their paw as a club, shattered the bull's skull and shoulder bones so easily that the betting became poor.
So they decided to bring in African lions to raise the stakes. The most fearsome out of all the male lions was sent in whilst the bear was already waiting in the pits. The lion was known for boldly rushing straight in but the grizzly killed the lion as easily as he had killed the bull.
The Californians never knew why the lion lost so easily. We now know that it was a strong bone density in the bears paw meeting the lion's low density skull. At a range of 4 feet the blow smashed in the lion's skull before the lion could apply the windpipe lock with their jaws.
The windpipe lock is typical lion and tiger hunting technique used for taking down prey where as a bear kills with a blow from its paw. This means that due to the big cat's instinct to rush in and kill with a bite, it will always setting its self up to be killed by the bears paw.
