Anyone with a brain knows they were shit Pokémon from the worst gen(opinion). And Pokémon like Magmar and Electabuzz fell short anyway. When they do something with them, it's bad. When they don't do something with them, it's bad.
And at that point, I don't even try to reason with them anymore. If the franchise were really doing bad, GameFreak wouldn't make it past Gen III. Gen VI and we're still going strong. I want Pokémon to beat Mario in sales. If you're a real Pokémon fan, support the games and even the merchandise that comes in every time a new Gen gets introduced.
