you're basically getting a free hone claws for doing nothing and a stab attack which is brutally strong for no fucking reason on a pokemon who is plenty fast. as long as you don't encounter a steel, rock, or ghost type pokemon you should tear through everything in game. it learns close combat by level up so that covers the first two.
protect, facade, shadow claw, and close combat should kill everything.
