Honestly gonna have to go with GSC.. They got the proportions perfect (Which HGSS also did), but also had a much darker, more shadowy look by having it essentially be pitch black. Looks less like a physical shape, and more like an ethereal being.

Of course, HGSS comes in a close second. The newer design of Gengar basically IS a physical shape, and as far as those go, HGSS nailed it. That game had some of the best sprites, really...

Agreed. The spriters were amazing and finally fixed outstanding problems like Gliscor and others. I get the feeling the DPPT guys were butthurt over it and put their sprites in as a fuck you to the HGSS guys.

I think that, since BW were being made alongside HGSS, they had the DPP sprites already in there and animated and it would have been too much work to put the good sprites in.

Crystal and Yellow are my favourites for Gengar.

I agree that HG/SS had some great sprites though. The only glaringly bad ones that come to mind are Blastoise and Vaporeon

I think the black is cool because he's supposed to be a shadow, and the sprites back then weren't really to depict what the creature would look like realistically.

So for the best realistic coloration, it's pretty much pinkish purple vs. blue purple. I like the former better

Yeah, I don't know what the hells going on with Charizard. For such a popular pokemon, they seem oddly resistant to trying to fix him.

Pidgeot is one of the few exceptions.

I'm particularly fond of the Gold/Silver sprite, as it is the only incarnation of Gengar that looks intimidating.

I do prefer him personality-wise as a huge piece of shit, but it's kind of interesting to see what appears to be genuine malice on his face.

Platinum swithced that around: new mons have shittass sprites, whereas old mons have decent ones.
Still, HGSS Machamp is the only decent Machamp sprite. Ever.
