the gradual change to hyper-offense was bound to happen. It's simply what happens when you keep adding more and more pokemon.

Defense is reactionary. It's hard to defend (ie, react) to offensive threats when there are SO MANY. Ergo, it becomes more favorable to minimize defense and use a more offensive strategy.

This. Cumulative gaps in your defence form. No matter how many unique offensive threats amass you can only have 6 pokemon to defend against them.

Also why quickstall has risen in BW, as substitute pretty much let's you buffer your way through what would normally KO you
