Digimon was originally conceived as a form of tamagotchi. Nothing about it involved collecting anything. In fact, until the Wonderswan games and Digimon World 2, I don't think you could even HAVE more than one digi. Digimon would become more defined by it's anime and TCG, and always had a different audience than pokemon. They both have creatures with powers? I suppose we should consider everything a ripoff of old myths at that rate.

Also, while maybe one or two pokemon look like digimon vaguely, I think we can probably attribute it to them coming from the same source material, similar animals, similar myths and legends, etc.

Pokemon is more of a cute, lighthearted thing whereas Digimon is more "realistic"

Everyone knows that Digimon has superior stories and character developments. And since I got back into watching it, I've come to realize that their evolution system is much more complex than Pokemon's, and that their mon designs are just as good, if not better, than some Pokemon designs.

Tamagotchi might be older, but Digimon was just ONE tamagotchi, not all of them. That's like saying all monster collection or training before Pokemon was also Pokemon. It isn't. Digimon did not invent the tamagotchi, and Pokemon did not invent monster training or collection. They merely evolved from it. The entity that was LABELED as Digimon did nit exist until after Pokemon was released, but I am not convinced they intended to take the same market. They are two separate entities, and always were.

Agreeing with this guy. I love the Pokemon games, and the anime was fun as a kid, but if you watch both series it's clear which one is the better written one. Digimon has real stakes, stories with character development that actually ends, and is overall just a better anime series. And Pokemon wasn't really the first "cute monsters" Japanese property anyway.

The English dub is a pretty good dub for its time, really. But yeah Japanese is probably better if you don't have nostalgia for the dub.

Also I recommend Tamers for a first viewing because...well, it's one of the best ones, even if Adventure/02 is what I grew up with. Plus Adventure/02 runs pretty long.

Pretty sure they're all still Japanese, they just have "nicknames" in the dub version. Their original Japanese names were even used in merch (besides Taichi and Hikari, which got a new Japanese last name for some reason).

Dude, I grew up with Tamagotchi, Pokemon and Digimon. Tamagotchi and Digimon have a LOT to do with each other, including how the original toys worked in the first place. They were even advertised as the battling version of Tamagotchi.

And even IF you consider them separate series (which I don't), Tamagotchi and Digimon still have a lot more in common than Pokemon and Digimon do.

What does it matter which came first anyway? What does it matter what some egotistical kids made up because back then? I got into Digimon because of Pokemon, and I ended up liking both equally. There is such a thing. Kids just wanted to create rivalries out of misunderstanding. It doesn't have to be this way. I may have not been involved with anything Digimon since the end of Savers, but I still liked what I know.
