I guess people look at the people who like things like Lucario, Typhlosion, and Lopunny, which are without a doubt what one could consider "furry", and think "those are all Pokemon, Gardevoir is a Pokemon, people who like Gardevoir must be furries." I quite enjoy Gardevoir, and I absolutely despise anything "furry".
