Looking at this pic really puts things into perspective. Nearly one half of the Pokemon are either starters, evos, or legendaries.

Platinum wasn't even the best game in its generation, HGSS shits all over it. I can see how it might be perceived as a great game though, considering how bad DP was; at least the changes made in Platinum made Team Galactic more palpable and enjoyable.

I don't think a small pokedex is a problem, I liked Sinnoh's region, I liked the gen 4 music, I liked the Battle Frontier (despite being stripped down compared to Emerald's), I liked Barry, I liked Cynthia, I even liked most of the Pokemon designs besides the legendaries (which granted, there were a lot of).

The surf speed was shit, even in Plat, the lack of water routes was jarring, there were way too many legendaries, and not a lot of new Pokemon. None of that makes me hate the game though.

New pokemon are one of the things that make a generation memorable. As it stands, due to the lack of a wow factor from generation IV, it's just not memorable. Generation V B/W will always be acknowledged as a parallel to R/B/G, and that's because the pokemon. It was fresh. The designs were good.

Actually, I liked the small pokedex and few Evolines.
It led to many strong pokemon being introduced to the scene. You could actually form the asis for a solid team before the second gym. Compare to Gen 3 where you had almost nothing but Trash Pokemon available for most of the game unless you traded.

That is exactly 20% more. Also about 1/3 of the pokemon in D/P were legendary and some locked behind "We'll if you would have lived in NYC or Japan, you could have gotten it, but you don't so no legendary for you"

I like most of the stand-alone Gen 4 Pokemon. And many of the prevos, evos, and Legendaries.

I also like most of the Pokemon created from all six gens and have no problem with the ones i don't like per se.

Even if they are, the game didn't really allow for much variety team-wise beyond that if you wanted decent Pokemon that were also good in-game.

Also note that you'd need to keep Shroomish from evolving until the Victory Road if you wanted Spore Breelom.

Fourth generation became the point at which potential niches for preexistent families of pokemon were already so plentiful that it was more of a question along the lines of:

-Squander this bulk of potential for the sake of maintaining higher count of completely new families?

or

-Release less new pokemon families so that older ones can have their viability and future replay value extended, as well as relieve further gens from this issue?

I'll sound like a faggot, but I am kind of happy with mafia birds, living tanks, magnet UFOs and flamboyant gladiators.

I second this. Most Sinnoh pokemon were really bad and forgettable, but the cross-gen eves are pretty great though. The problem is, the game itself had shitty variety, so you could only use a handful of good pokemon and hardly any of the cross-gen eves.
D/P made god-tier improvements on the entire franchise, with great new mechanics and overworld. Not to mention it had the one of the best storylines and great characters (Barry and Cynthia).
the e4 was horrible though. hell, flint even had a fucking theme instead of type specialty because there were are grand total of five original fire pokemon, and three of them were a starter line, one was a cross-gen evo, and another was a fucking legendary.

Why did they even bother giving Aipom, Lickitung, or Tangela an evolution?
Why did they give silly-looking hats to Mismagius and Honchkrow? Their original forms looked badass.
Why did they make the evolutions of Rhydon, Electabuzz, and Magmar just fat ugly versions of themselves?

I remember doing the same "calculations" when D/P came out. It felt really disappointing, probably the main reason why that was the first and only time I skipped the main games straight to the enhanced (platinum) version and held off with buying a DS for so long.
