I don't think it'll be held back too much as long as it has good boosting moves. Volcarona has a double rock weakness and does just fine with quiver dance.

Just give it dragon dance or, i dunno, bellydrum. It'd probably rape

For in-game the cool looking is all that matters. You don't have to worry about Stealth Rock and other stuff in-game, even shit stats doesn't matter cause you have items for healing and usually the player are some levels above the other trainers anyaway. Even shit like Farfetch'd and Luvdisc can be used with no problems if you like them. And in matter of looking, Charizard is awesome.
People started this shit of hating it just to annoy genyunners and fanboys, but everybody knows that it's a cool pokémon.

Even Charmeleon doesn't have them down it's neck and back like Charmander did. Well, ridges at least. They weren't quite Nido-esque horns anyway.

Charizard line is only partially based on dragons, its also based on Salamander a fire elemental. People thought Salamanders had something to do with ashes back in the day.
