Rapidash or Zebstrika for the knights.
I'd say Golurk for the rooks as it is a tall, plodding Pokémon despite not being a literal rock wall. You could also use Golem if you feel like going for the classics.

Now it would be interesting to add Reshiram and Zekrom here but I cannot think of a way to do so...

I don't like that, out of all these Pokémon to choose from, four pieces share a family with another (well, the Nidos only technically).

I think there are a lot of possibilities to be explored in the idea of Kings, Queens, and Pawns... Although I think that Bisharp is a must. But not both Pawniard and Bisharp.

There are way too many Pokemon. You should give it a theme for it to look nice.
Gen vs Gen, Region vs Region (not the same), themed around two certain trainers, by type. Just some ideas of the top of my head.

Bisharp just doesn't work as a Bishop, guys. Pawniard might as the pawn, but I really don't think the translation team thought the naming of the evolution through. They just wanted it to relate to the previous one.

no matter what pokemon you use,(unless you're going to strictly abide to a color vs. color scheme) I think it'll be necessary to have the figurines on two different colored bases to distinguish the sides

Why do all the pawns have to be the same? Why not eight different mons each?

Black could have little dark-coloured mons like Ghastly, Unown, Spoink, Shuppet...

And white could have guys like Vanillite, Litwick, Foongus, etc.

Because it's easier to pick up visually. Having 8 mons representing the pawn makes everything quite confusing. Having one Pokemon representing one piece allows you to correlate both easier.

Just some idea for gen 1

Mew/Mewtwo as Alternate King and Queen

Ratata (numberous pokemon), diglett (looks similiar to a pawn piece), nidorans (can evolve into a nidoran/nidoqueen), ditto (can transform into any piece), voltorb (pokeballs thematically work), cubone (child soldier maybe?, mirrors Pawniard pretty well), as possible pawns?

I really don't think it would be that confusing, you'd just need a way to distinguish them from the other pieces, like making them small and/or putting them on a platform or something.

Everyone says that Nidoking and Nidoqueen should be ideal. While I agree with them being my favorite Pokemon, I think it'd be better for the other side to have different Pokemon, just to mix things up. Like maybe Rosderade and Lilligant? idk this is just at the top of my head
