so usually its whatever is on my mind at the time. I couldn't explain 90% of my nicknames in previous games if we went through them.

City names, don't really know why, just like it.
Usually pick a city the the Pokemon reminds me of in some way. Some are harder than others to name.

For example, if I catch a male Garedevoir it's obviously gonna be Bangkok. But what the fuck is a rattatta gonna be?

When I was a kid, I'd name them after my friends.

Nowadays, I switch it up. For my recent Gold run, I named everyone after a pro-wrestler. In my new White Nuzlocke, I'm giving everyone black names.

If a fitting media reference pops into my head, I usually go with it. If I'm not getting anything, I might look for a name that has a meaning fitting the Pokémon, and if none of them sound right for it, I tend to just pick a name that sort of sounds like the species name.

As of Black/White I started naming all my Pokemon after the Norse pantheon.

Though in B/W2 I decided to be autistic and name every Pokemon I caught. My main Pokemon were still Norse gods, but all the others I painstakingly looked up characters/flora/fauna/things/etc. from Wheel of Time to name them after.

I use naming themes when playing through the games, but for Nuzlockes or for my competitive teams I"ll just use what comes to mind.

For my recent Black2 playthrough I named my pokemon after food dishes like Hamburger or Fettuccine.

For Leaf Green I named them simply after the types the represented. So my Blastoise was named Water, my Parasect was BugGrass.

My Platinum play through they were named after Roman gods.

It's good to mix it up and learn about different things to go along with naming. Naming shit after the animals/things they were based off of can lead to some interesting knowledge of said animal/thing if you research it for a particularly clever name.

When I'm playing just to play and have fun? Roll of the dice. My W2 team consists of: Smarmy, Alexandira, Alucard, Arcweild, Arcana, Chips, and Kevin. Can you guess what they are?

Smarmy the Serperior, Alexandria the Magmortar, Alucard the Zoroark, Arcweild the Electrivire, Arcana the Azumaril, Chips the Drapion, and Kevin the Gliscor... I don't remember why he was named Kevin. I don't know anyone named Kevin

Just try find names that not only work well as names but also tie in with the pokemon in someway

For example you could nickname a Blaziken Tyson because it learns Sky uppercut and Mike Tyson's signature move is his uppercut, also Tyson Foods is the largest processors and marketers of chicken
If that fails just give it a human name that starts with the same letters as the pokemon's name or something to do with its type

Recently for BW2, it was /co/mics and cartoons, so I have a bunch of Pokemon named Booster (Gold), PowerGirl, Zatanna, Fluttershy, Aradia, Evangelyne, Janet and stuff like that.

Other times I won't be able to get something out of my head and then I'll just name it that. I have like four different Pokemon named Dorks, Rolf and Kevin because I spent a week marathoning Ed Edd and Eddy.

Wasn't necessarily going for a Castlvania theme. Hellsing is one of my favorite manga, and Alucard my favorite character. Also the black/red colors are fitting with him, not to mention his familiar Baskerville is a black and red dog.

Though I don't think I went through the whole process of thinking it out. I think I just went "It's red and dark! I'm gonna name it Alucard, derp."

Chimchar line - Sawyer (Cat's name).
Among others.

If I ever start using Steelix's I'll call them Rusty, like Jasmine, the only NPC trainer you trade with who doesn't give their Pokemon a retarded name.

I did make my entire team female once, including my starter, in Sapphire and named them after my female friends. Was pretty cool.
