Why does everyone circle jerk over these games?

All they did is prove WHY Pokemon works best as a handheld title. The dialogue was fucking stupid, the plot wasn't that amazing (honestly Rui had no business even existing) and it was incredibly boring to playthrough in one sitting. XD improved the gameplay but the plot there is even stupider (no interesting anti-hero protag, instead you're a snot nosed kid chasing his retarded little sister around). Sorry but these games were not great games by any means and theres a reason theres never been another console Pokemon games.

The redundancy of the dialogue was an unfortunate result of the translators having stupidly stringent restrictions placed on what they were allowed to modify. And something I find it easier to look past, knowing about that.

Did you notice that the only time Rui ever talks to another female trainer is when one calls her a wallflower in an attempt to hit on the protag? Its not just a matter of translation, its just bad writing in general.

His goals are never clear, why did he steal the snag machine in the first place? Why did he decide to become a "good guy?" For all we know he could have been well aware of Cipher and went under cover as a Team Snagem member just for the purpose of stealing the snag machine. And all I meant was why is a monocle so unrealistic when Rui's ability to see Shadow Pokemon is never explained? And even another mention of her having some kind of 6th sense would be fine, like maybe some back story on her or something, a history of seeing shit. But nope, we got nothing!

I'm saying what I honestly think of the game, I'm not just here to shit on everyones good time. Colosseum has great atmosphere and character design (from an artistic standpoint only) and some catchy music, but beyond that it doesnt nearly qualify as a "good game." There are some glaring problems with it that I feel should be addressed.

There was a decent amount of flirting between the female Cipher peons and Wes, but "every" is some exaggeration. Failing to pass the Bechdel Test is hardly grounds for being considered bad writing; it only points out gender bias, and when the point of the dialogue is conversations that you're having, and you're playing as a male, how is it a surprise that it exists?

This is delving far into headcanon, but. As I pointed out, his goal wasn't to stop Cipher until after he met Rui. Rui's the one who suggested using the snag machine to snag Shadow Pokémon, and I figure that initially, he was just going to help Rui get back to Agate, but he got more and more involved and gradually became more and more of a "good guy".

No one's complaining about the monocle itself being unrealistic. It existing would be unrealistic because Cipher wanted Shadow Pokémon dispersed through the population, and inventing a monocle that helps people identify Shadow Pokémon wouldn't help them much at all.

It doesn't exist in any other Pokemon game, and it sort of points out another issue. Playing as a girl in Pokemon games had been a staple at that point, why couldn't you choose to play as Rui (or a female equivalent of Wes)? And that wasn't the only example of poor writing, though as you said a lot of it can be chalked up to shitty translation so I'll give you this one.

Suppose you were developing Shadow Pokemon. You'd want to be able to see when they were shadow and when they went into hyper mode right? You'd need some kind of gadget to allow you to see their aura for proper testing. Obviously they would never intend for a thing like that to leave Cipher's HQ. This is sort of stepping into annoying fan theory territory, but my initial point was just that Rui didn't need to be in the game and could easily be replaced the way she was in XD.

While that is an issue,all of that could have been changed by what she said.
For example,when you rescued her from the bag,she could have said "I don't need help from you." And that instantly could have changed your view on her.

I love the fan theories about Colosseum.
Some of my favorites:
A connection between Dakim and Alder- They both have similar hair, jump off mountains, and wear Pokeball necklaces (A trait other members of Alders family have). Plus Orre and Unova are likely close to each other, since they're based on places in America
Orre is a post-nuke society- Pokemon can survive in the desert but there aren't any wild pokemon in Orre. Plus at the beginning of Colosseum you can see some destroyed structures in the sand. This is very common for post apocalyptic games/shows.
Wes betrayed his team because he loves his pokemon too much- His Pokemon start out with max friendship and Espeon has return. Perhaps they wanted to Shadow-fy his pokemon and he didn't want it. There's a similar theory with Miror B and his Ludicolos, since none of them were shadow.

Normally game based theories are fucking retarded but the Colosseum ones all seem to plausible.

Honestly, I don't understand how you can complain about the dialogue, when Pokemon games are hardly centred around thrilling dialogue or plot. Rui did have a big part in existing, in fact without her Wes would never have been able to snag the shadow Pokemon. I've played through Colosseum several times and never became bored. Perhaps the double battles were not for everyone, but I enjoyed them. Battles were long and the shadow Pokemon also added an extra element to battles as you had to base your moves around catching them.

Colosseum offered something different. It wasn't a main Pokemon game, and I am glad it wasn't, that is what made it enjoyable as it was a new experience but with familiar gameplay. I dislike people like you who are so stuck in one mindset that a game cannot be allowed to be slightly different. To me if proved that Pokemon can work as a console game. I don't care about 3D, I just enjoy playing Pokemon. I don't understand why people are so opposed to a console game being released, when it is perfectly viable if done in the correct way.

But that's wrong. Like legitimately wrong. As in factually incorrect.

Colosseum may have the better Protag, but everything about XD is better.

Better purifying methods
easier acess to TMs
MUCH better purification moves, as in 90% of the XD pokes are good, instead of Colosseum and their pitiful purification moves beyond Entei. Like seriously, Gligar get's purified with it's standard moves while Flaffy gets thunderbolt? What kind of bullshit is that?

It didn't help that half of Colosseum's pokemon were useless in-game. You get a Smeargle, but no way to get moves like belly drum and Spore without going through some extracurricular bullshit.

Dunsparce you can't even use because you can't abuse it's flinch hax cause LOL NO HEADBUTT or even Rock Slide.

Th greatest problem with Colosseum is you can't turn off the battle effects.

It's fun seeing espeon use psychic the first 10 times but after 50 times it's just annoying completely taking the flow out of the game.

Also the lack of choice and freedom really grinds my gears.

I just wished it was like pokemon stadium instead we got this shit.

Colosseum was great, but as the previous poster said, the battles are way too slow.

I transferred some of my bros from Emerald to stomp through that mountain area and get Ho-oh, but it took forever anyway because of the animations.

XD greatly accelerated battles, nevertheless I never bothered to finish it.

I'd love to see another console pokemon RPG. Colosseum had its flaws, but I appreciate it for doing things differently. While double battles aren't my favorite, I like that they made them front-and-center instead of having them like they are in the portable games (a straight-up gimmick with only half a dozen double battle trainers in the game, total). I also liked the greater difficulty curve and the really fleshed-out cities and dungeons, rather than having cities that are 3 houses + a pokemon center.

a console pokemon RPG would be perfect if:
- they sped up the battles somehow. I know with 3D they want to be flashy, but yeah (also, this could be a problem for X/Y)
- they added routes so it wasn't just quicktravel. Keep the large and fleshed-out locations as well though
- they added wild pokemon

Yes the dialogue left a sour taste in your mouth and the battles were long
but I sorta enjoyed watching my pokemon shoot things at other pokemon and react to said things.

The main characters were enjoyable and Iconic. I usually hate damsels in distress in games but it tends to happen! I mean shit how many escort quests are there in other games or a horrible sidekick who follows you around. I think she was meant to be put there so Wes had more of a motive to change and be different than his previous life. He had someone to take care of and cherish with him and enjoy some company.

True she could've been replaced by some object but I'd like to think it was impossible for Wes to grab more than two objects back in Cipher's Base. Also if anyone played the game, the goons were usually testing out their shadow pokemon or grabbing new pokemon to change, they had no objects to recognize shadow pokemon.

In XD, i'd like to believe he has that monocle thingy because it had been a few years from Wes's story and it's possible Wes had told others about it and they either A. Confiscated everything Cipher had or B. Recreated the technology or made new technology to see shadow pokemon.

Rui had to be there for Wes, simple as that. Even if she was annoying. At least she wasn't giving you random annoying tips.

People wanted more pokemon in the game but it wasn't possible because there'd be too many models for the gamecube to handle from Kanto-Hoenn.

All in all I really enjoyed this game and concept. The shadow pokemon gave you a purpose for catching them instead of being like LEL CATCH THEM ALL FOR POKEDEX. (Cont)

and the fact that you have to build a bond with your shadow pokemon was awesome.

I love both games, although Colosseum is most memorable than XD.
