Best starter is Riolu.
Grind for a while on the ranch and you will find one.

Besides the two weeks on my emulated platinum run, I haven't played since the red/blue days yo, that's a lot of pokemans to go through, but I am reading up on the newer stuff

yeah, Black has a different storyline, characters and area and doesn't feature many mons from other generations. It's like a Gen I to Black 2's Gen II.

Personally I think Black/White2 are just straight upgrades, but the originals do have valid differences.
