I'm less concerned with avoiding repeated types than I am with using what I like.

I'll admit the W2 team is particularly bad with that, but it was originally intended to be a bro run, so there didn't tend to be repetition on my team at a given moment.

I always make some sort of rules for every run:
>1. Just use pokemon from the region, not introduced evos (yanmega, pichu) shit like that, just pokemon that were born in the damn region.
>2. Obligatory Grass/Water/Fire trio
>3. Obligatory electric type (i skipped this rule in hoenn because manectric is ugly as hell and the only pikaclones i like are pachirisu and emolga,but anyways at least i teached shock wave to chimecho)
>4. Obligatory poison/ghost type
>5. The last pokemon of your party is up to you
I skipped rule 1 in white2 and rather i had a pokemon from every region, (since it was the same damn region as white1)

You play the exact opposite way I play
>Nothing can look deliberate at all, no trios, no starters, no eeveelutions. Only break this rule occasionally because if you don't then it'll look deliberate.
>Must use Pokemon from a mix of all regions
>Do not raise a team found only within the regional dex
>Must only have one Pokemon per type

how do some of you people not get bugged with your limited coverage?
Whenever I've made a team its always Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Flying then the sixth is whatever I like of the other types (usually a fighting or dark pokemon)

Now allow me to explain myself. Hoenn was my first gen and I thought nicknames were stupid. Also, didn't care for legendary overpower.
In gen 6 I used genesect because I got it early and... It wasn't even that strong.

Gen 1, 2 and 3 are all my first ever teams for those games. I never restarted my Red, Crystal or Emerald games. I looked back at my Platinum game, this was the last team I used a year or so ago.

For the first couple of Gens I just used my starter for everything. I was like 7 when Blue came out and 9 when Silver came out. I didn't have the attention span to think through a good team, I just chose a starter and beat the shit out of everyone.

I chose the team by generations.
First time I played B/W I hated all of the Pokemon besides those six, then I played B/W2 and loved fucking everything.

Gen 1:I didn't have friends who played pokemon that could help me evolve some of them ;_;

Gen 2:I'm not sure about Espeon. It might have been a third Gyarados.

Gen 3:Exploud and Aggron were true soldiers going against all odds.

Gen 4:Spikes spamming shenanigans.

Gen 5:FUCK YEAH REUNICLUS. Part of my team being slow against the Elite 4 was really a mess.

Gen 5, Electric Boogaloo:Didn't like fire pig nor samurai otter.I think I was close minded about other gen 5 pokemon being part of my main team.

To clarify, the Gliscor and Rhyperior in Gen IV were a Rhydon and Gligar from Gen III, though I got a ffriend who beat the game before me to trade them over to me right before the E$, where I evolved them. In BW I got the Nidoking as a Dream World Nidoran in a trade, and I traded another Dream World Nidoran over to BW2. Gen III is my least favorite gen(Though I do like it) simply because I didn't get to use Nidoking.(Though I did trade one over in Emerald.)

I can't remeber all my six pokemon from my gen I and gen II playthroughs. These are the only ones I remember from Red, Yellow, Silver and Crystal (I had a Pikachu in Yellow but she was not my bro).
Mewtwo was my best bro ever in Red, my first at lvl 100 and even after that I continued training him!
In my first playthrough in Sapphire i chose Treecko but I can't remeber anyone else. My second playthrough I chose Mudkip and maybe I trained a Breelom.
In my third I chose all three starter, a Larvitar and a Hitmonlee from the very begining (as can be seen in the template).
My first playthrough in FireRed I chose Squirtle but can't remeber anyone else, maybe a Raticate and a Pidgeot. I don't know. The template's team are from my second playthrough.
I didn't played Diamond and Pearl but I played Platinum twice.

These are what I can remember of my first runs. For some reason I had easier time remembering the older gen games. Like, I could tell you where, when, and why I got the pokemons for gen 1 and 2.

The pokemon are ordered chronological to my adventure from left to right.

A few statements:

The gen 1/2 teams are those that I used for link battles back in the day, while the 4/5 teams are mostly those I beat the game with.

I gave Sapphire a single playthrough, didn't approve, haven't touched a Hoenn game since. I remember little about it, and think I was mostly just butthurt that I couldn't transfer over my team from Crystal. That, and I hated the music, even back then. Solution: turn the damned volume down, problem solved.

Breloom and Ninjask are total bros, and if you have a problem with my reuse of them to this very day, you can blow it out your ass.

My only hard-and-fast rule is that I never ditch my starter - we started that journey together, and by god, we're going to finish it together. My second White run (with Hilda) had the additional rule of no Pokemon I've used before.

My first game was Yellow, and my first team consisted of mostly lvl 10 mons and a lvl 85 Pidgeot mega-sweeper after I beat the E4. I affectionately remember that Pidgeot as "The Rapist".

And yes, half of my Johto team came from my Platinum game. I brought them over to hammer the shit out of the Kanto gyms, and they became a staple of my team once again.

I think it's cool how each team formed its own identity, especially starting in 3rd gen. Always had a team elader who got shit done and could switch in to help exp. train the weaker ones; and an ace who could sweep anyone in the game when I just didn't want to be challenged. Platinum, despite having none of my pokebros, was my favorite playthrough ever.
