Physical/special split was needed.
The system beforehand was so stupid. tons of pokemon didn't even have stab moves avaliable to them because of their typing.

don't forget how certain walls were basically impenetrable due to having no weakness on their strong side (ex: skarm had no physical weaknesses and bliss/snorlax had no special weakness)

Sceptile still has an excellent physical movepool Acrobatics goes perfectly with Unburden and allows Sceptile to outspeed any Choice Scarf user (except Ninjask and Deoxys-S, who never run Scarf sets) and it has Drain Punch for recovery. Ideally Sceptile gets a special Acrobatics or his attack and special attack get switched (which won't happen).

Well take skarmory for instance. Before gen IV all electric and fire moves were special. Skarmory is meant to take physical hits.

In gen IV suddenly flare blitz exists, and physical pokemon can now muscle past it by using its fire weakness.

Blissey's sheer stats make it an exception.

Ah, that's true. But if Skarmory were only weak to, say, Flying and Ghost (for some reason), it could take any move from those types rather well without having to worry about its special stat much since it can't even be hit super effectively on that side. I get what you mean, but in Gen III it would have been more beneficial for walls to only be weak on their stronger side.

There was but in Gen III and generations before a Pokemon move's classification was based on type: Outrage was special because it was Dragon and Shadow Ball was physical because it was Ghost. Now Outrage is physical and Shadow Ball is special.

it refers to the fact that moves before gen 4 were classed as physical or special based on their type, instead of being individual
it's the reason Salamence wasn't as much of a driving force back then, due to it's Dragon stab using it's weaker attacking stat

Where would Gen 5 be if Phys/Spec split didn't exist?
Weavile would be shit at using STAB Ice and Dark because of mediocre base Sp.Atk
Bisharp wouldn't be so sharp as well, only focusing on Physical Flash Cannon
Hitmonlee would still be the superior Hitmon, because the Elemental Punches would still be Special
Acid Spray would sharply lower Defense upon hitting
Shadow Ball would probably still have the weird bit of a chance of lowering Sp.Def, even though like other Ghost moves, it's still physical

the split was great. The only guys who really got the short end of the stick were special attackers that relied on the elemental punches. and AFAIK most of them were compensated with the addition of new attacks. I think ampharos is still worse off though, iirc.

Dark could lower defense by two stages, whereas fighting would lower defense by one stage. Ghost would lower special defense by one stage. Psychic could confuse. Water could lower speed by a stage, steel could lower attack by a stage, and so on.
