When atomic fire consumed the earth, those who survived did so in great, underground bases. When they opened, their inhabitants set out across ruins of the old world to build new societies, establish new villages, form new teams.
As decades passed, what had been the Unovian southwest united beneath the flag of the Pokemon League, dedicated to old-world values of badges and the rule of levels. As the League grew, so did its needs. Campers spread east, seeking territory and wealth, in the dry and merciless expanse of Route 111. They returned with tales of a tower untouched by the warheads that had scorched the rest of the world, and a great wall spanning the route.
The NPL mobilized its trainers and set it east to occupy the Battle Frontier, and restore it to working condition. But across the ocean, another society had arisen under a different flag. A vast army of degenerates, forged in the conquest of 86 teams: Team Plasma.
Four years have passed since the League held the Frontier - just barely - against Plasma's onslaught. Plasma did not retreat. Across the ocean, they gathered strength. Campfires burned, Belly Drums beat.
Through it all, Castelia has stayed open for business under the control of its mysterious overseer, Elesa, and her army of Electric Pokemon and Officer Jennys.
