I actually watched a bit of it during Diamond and Pearl to see why in the fuck Ash's journey was still going on after not having seen it since early into Ruby and Sapphire.

Yeah, they don't even try to hide their blatant repurposing of past storylines and characteristics to fit new (and I use "new" incredibly fucking loosely) characters and Pokemon. I can't blame them for the most part, since most of the audience is bound to be young anyways.
