So, I got a new 3DS today, and the R4 card I've been using for months on my ds lite is now not working.

Whenever I start it up, I get an error message. The card is an R4i 3DS, anyone know what I need to do?

Roms are legal as long as you've bought a copy of the game. Sorry gamefreak is too fucking retarded to allow multiple save files in their games.

I'm not about to delete my file, just so I can play the game from the start

Is your 3DS' software up to date? If you updated it to 5.1 you can't use any flashcart (at least not yet)
So you'll either have to wait or delete your current savefile

Actually they aren't. But I don't quite give a damn. I use a DSTwo. Try downloading the latest firmware from your card's website. You'll probably have to update it on an original DS or DS lite.

There was an update about a year? or so ago and it blocked out most flash carts sadly. Hope you've got a normal DS + compatible flash cart or SCDS2 (I'm pretty sure those work with 3DSes, but can only run DS games).

Actually, I'm surprised about how many flashcarts still work on 3ds, it's like ninty isn't trying, I buy pokemon games tho, only have a white 2 randomizer v for nuzlocke

Sadly, my 3ds got updated when I sent it in for repair between Christmas and New Year.
