Towards the middle, Iris laments how she's not progressing towards her goal of being a Dragon Master, and Ash recalls his experience with Charizard and how it made him a better trainer. For that reason, Ash 'traded' it to Iris, and by trade I mean he gave it to her for nothing.
What's funny is that in the upcoming Gen 6 arc, Iris is being replaced while Dent stays. So Charizard will never be seen again.
