This is my own, meandering opinion, based on my understanding of traditional Folklore from around the world.

Fairy is a simplified, 'cutsey' term for Spirit, not in the same sense as Ghosts, but rather the living presence of nature. This covers all forms of nature, from the traditional dryad and treant figures to lake and river spirits that drowned naughty children in various myths.

The woman with butterfly wings is a relatively 'new' image. Even in European folklore 'faeries' were more prone to being more humanesque. Think of elves in the Tolkien vein, but give them razor sharp teeth and a tendency to prey on mortals. Wings aren't necessary, nor even exceedingly prevalent.

Something to look up might be the baobhan sihdes, rusalka, blemmies, redcaps, kappa, huldufolk, and anything pertaining to the keywords 'elves' 'fae' or 'yokai' as all of them fall into the base generalization of 'fairy' in folklore terms. Anything translated from Japanese to English as 'demon' or 'spirit' could also be considered a 'fairy'.

Depending on what you make of Authorian Legends, Excalibur is a fairy-forged blade. If that strikes you as bad justification for SE against dragons, many northern fairytales include fae weapons used for killing serpents.

Maril is probably considered an incarnation/protector spirit of water, not unlike a Japanese Kappa in function at least.

Fairies come in all kinds and ilks. Fairy is a broad term that includes a lot of creatures. Pixies, leprechauns, harpies, sirens, etc. can all be called fairies.

As for the association with Faries to the moon, I think this is a strictly Japanese thing.

Remember how, once upon a time, there was an Episode about Pokemon comping from the moon? At the very least the games have agreed to this to the extent of the clefairy coming from the moon.

This itself is an old Japanese folktale about a race of 'fairies' coming to earth on a ship from the moon. It's been awhile since I've read up on it, so forgive me I can't give a consice summation of it, but you should be able to find it with a quick google.

The only other reason I can figure to make the association is that many european fae came out at night. Some to prey on humans, ones I mentioned in the previous post. Others were the more helpful folk, like the story of the shoemaker and his elves, who came out at night and repaired the shoes, only to disappear by morning.

This children's character here, is referred to as a "yousei".

I've also seen animal spirits referred to as yousei in addition to girls with wings.

In the Pokemon mythos, there's a type of pokemon that has a certain amount of mystery about it - they're often connected to phenomena, astronomy, outer space, the moon, etc. They're usually cutesy pokemon with healing or utility type designs, occasionally legendaries. Simply being cute and mysterious is often enough to be related to this Fairy concept. Many of them belong to the Fairy Egg Group.

These pokemon have often been placed as Normal or Psychic types, being pink blobs as Normal Types and possessing fae aesthetics as Psychic types.

This new typing now allows these pokemon to be part of their own grouping. This is good in itself, but it further defines the identity of the groups they used to be part of. Psychic was once the blanket term for anything magical, but will now go back to its roots as the specification for psychokinetic and occult-y pokemon. Normal now goes back to being for ordinary beast-like pokemon only.

Meanwhile, a new Typing allows for a better reshaping of the metagame than new pokemon, moves or abilities will. Because of this, pokemon that may not be traditionally Fairy types now become candidates for it, for the sake of balance or diversity.

Honestly, it's a really smart idea on the part of Gamefreak, and it does a world of good for them on both the conceptual and competitive fronts.
