Yes, a lot of Gen I Pokemon's names were just describing what the Pokemon was, but that continued on through the generations with things like Claydol, Sudowoodo, Litwick and Chimchar.
However, all of those names roll off the tongue. Talonflame sounds like something a 12edgy57u 13 year old came up with as their name for Runescape, then decided to be even edgier and made it xXx_T@l0nF7am3_xXx
