It sort of is.

You can count how many steps it takes for an egg to hatch.

You can't really count how many pixels or yards.

Maybe they kept it because grids make it easier to
1. Count steps for eggs
2. Count steps for repels
3. Tell if you're walking/running for encounter rates
4. Count steps for poision
5. Count steps for VS Seeker
etc

They didn't keep it locked to grid because people wouldn't understand it, it's because it's easier to implement into the current system that they have.

You can code the game to initiate events when the PC walks up to a 'checkpoint' or something like a door entrance. There's no reason NOT to have free movement in the 6th generation games now that the console itself has an analog stick.
