Noivern is based of a giant man killing fruitbat criptid Ivan T. Sanderson claimed to have had an encounter with in Africa called Kongamata.

Also its secondary type is Dragon. Like the way Wyverns are not really dragons, but just poisonous lizards with wings.

Fact is it's both, kongamata are like a cross between giant fruitbats and pterodactyls. They were a cryptid almost certinly made up by Ivan T. Sanderson himself to sound heroic but that doesn't stop it being what the pokemon was based on.
