So how will they implement the fairy type into the lore? I mean all those normal/water/psychic pokemon just suddenly become fairy now do they?

So how will they explain that shit in the show/movies?

Back when they introduced steel, the only pokemon that was changed was Magnemite. That's okay to cover up.

But now?

I think they'll say they weren't able to... 'detect' fairy powers. So most Pokemon appeared just to be Normal.

If Fairy messes up my Spiritomb and Sableye lack of SE moves against them, I will mess up Satoshi Tajiri's pots and pans every day for the rest of his life.

Defenses have nothing to do with it. Offensively, Dragon is only resisted by one type. Combine that with huge BST, mostly in Attack or Special Attack, they just plow through teams with ease.
Since the leaks are looking more and more true, Fairy will probably be Immune to dragon, meaning they won't be able to spam Outrage/Draco Meteor so easily.

So they added a new type to hard counter Moxiemence and other Dragon sweepers.

Ghost should resist Fairy, still. Ghosts are underlooked. I like that they are the rarest type, but they need to be involved with the new supernatural Fairy type in some way.

Im hoping that the plot of the game will devote a part about something big happening that unlocks dorment potencial in a bunch of different pokemon, creating the Fairy type.

I dont really think GF gives that much of a fuck about consistancy but then again this gen has been full of neat supprises so far.

I think we're going to see a good number of Ghost/Fairy types in the future, to be honest. At the very least, I expect them to crop up fairly often in each other's 'dex entries.

Say you have lots of dogs. Like, big ones, small ones, all sorts of them.

They all have different breeds. Alsatian, Labrador, St.Bernard, Terrier, Poodle, Chihuahua, Basset Hound, Dalmatian, Husky, etc.

So, you always assumed that a certain type of dog was Labrador. You had all these long-haired furry Labradors and short haired Labradors.

But... turns out the long-haired ones are actually a separate breed of dog entirely. They're similar (in certain ways) to Labradors, but they're actually Golden Retrievers. So you take these dogs and assign them to this new breed.

Same with pokemon. Jigglypuff was always Normal/Fairy, but we never distinguished her as a Fairy before now. We're just creating a new type to better distinguish Fairy pokemon from other types of pokemon.

The explaination is credible, but it doesn't take in account weaknesses and resistances. To keep your example, your Golden Retriever won't gain additional resistance to heat since it's classified as such.

That's just mechanics. Lorewise, they don't really have any numeric way of studying the amount of damage each attack does, so noticing SE attacks is harder.

I'm pretty sure they're just running out of ideas for pokemon... the so-called "fairy" type is used in yugioh, instituting a clash between pokemon and yugioh. So, the real question is, who would win in a fight; Exodia, or Jigglypuff?

If they ever reference in canon, it would probably akin to how science handles it:

It makes me wonder if the professor this time around will specialize in the difference between pokemon types, and is the one who spearheaded the efforts to get Fairy type recognized as it's own. If the duo-attacks are actually canon, then it would make sense.

I'm sure that there are more professors than the five we know (or sixth soon), and that many real-world scientists have been able to successfully spearhead efforts for their theories and ideas to be recognized as fact... so I wouldn't be surprised if the canon reason for the addition of the Fairy-type was just that (if not the efforts of the actual sixth professor, as you said).

Now my personal fanon which I feel explains the whole "these Pokemon didn't come out of thin air, so why didn't Professor Oak know about them?" for me is that.... there is a single body of mainstream Pokemon research--part of the "Nation" (of the "National Pokedex")--and each generation of Pokemon is the story of a particular region "officially" adding their body of research to the "National" effort.

As in, it's not that these things (like new Pokemon, new types, etc) simply sprung into existence out of nowhere... it may have been because that region's professor finally worked hard enough to get their entire body of research recognized by the others.

Yeah, I'm much of the same view. It's also helped by the fact in the past, each Professor has had something to do with whatever new feature was introduced or showcased in that Gen, so I'm expecting at least some kind of "Yeah, turns out this subset of pokemon actually qualifies for a distinct type. We are working with the Pokemon Association to properly teach people how and why they're different from others."

They could always tie it into the current legendaries.

Just say they WEREN'T Fariy's until the hidden legendary of the game(The Arceus, so to speak), did something and suddenly imbued them with special powers. Now that they have those powers, they're a whole new type.

That way, whenever they figure out how to transfer pokemon over, they can just explain that your old pokemon couldn't do it because it didn't have the friendship bullshit magic yet.
