Will Gyarados be able to participate in flying battles? I've never understood why it's a flying type.

And don't give me the dragons are super effective to dragons excuse. With the inclusion of Fairy they can re-work the type chart.

This means Ice Type still has a shot of finding new uses this generation.

(Chinese dragons look a lot differently than European ones) However, dragon powers are a responsibility, and if the dragon abuses its powers, it gets demoted to a flying lizard thing. With previous pokemon generations they tried to distance the appearance of each new pokemon so they wouldn't be too similar. Since the new region is a significant distance away, they thought it might be appropriate to have a few pokemon look similar but be unrelated to previous pokemon. Just like in real-life we have similar looking animals on different continents who are different species.

In Gen I the only Dragon-type move was Dragonbreath, which does fixed damage. Since Water/Dragon is only weak to Dragon, Gyarados would've been even more overpowered then Psychic types back then.
Now if they actually start to change old Pokemon's types into Fairy (instead of just adding Fairy as a secondary type), I don't see why not retcon Gyarados to Water/Dragon too.
