>>12663773Because unlike most of the other English player name as an NPC those don't match up with the Japanese player names in any way.
>Haruka, or "spring", becomes May, a month in spring>Kouki, or "splendor", becomes Lucas, as in the latin word "Lux">Hikari, or "light", becomes Dawn, which is self-explanatory>Hibiki, or "sound" or "echo", becomes Ethan, which was the name of a biblical musician>Touya and Touko have the exact same prefix but with a suffix for names for boys and girls in Japan respectively, Hilbert and Hilda are the same prefix as well but different suffixes representing different genders>Kyouhei and Mei together are derived from "kyoumei", or resonate, and Nate and Rosa together make "RosaNate", or "resonate"Plus, when have VS battle screenshots ever had the actual canon names and not just generic things like the version name? Even the exact same screen from the Japanese version is just using blatant placeholders with "X" and "Y" in katakana.
>>12663846Because even if they're blank slates they still need a placeholder name to use in promotional material, can't just have a big empty gap or an "INSERT NAME HERE" where their name should go. And they don't use the NPC names to differentiate a player stand in for the NPC version of the character.
