Objectively no one will play as the male so his name doesn't matter. Serena reminds me of Sailor Moon which in turn reminds me of Rosa and Rosa is the best poke girl so I guess Serena is good too.

But this time around, npcs' designs are not same with player character's designs. In RSE for example, rivals used the unselected gender's designs completely. In this gen they are different.

The players default names are Xaviar and Yvonne. Calem and Serena are just the rivals. They're apparently separate characters which is why the rivals don't have a hat and the girl has a different hair style.

I feel like that trailer pulled a damn BW demo on us. I went to the BW tour they did around the US, they had demos of the games there and the protags names were Whitlea & Blair, which I liked and then when their names were officially Hilda & Hilbert I was pissed. Now Nintendo/GF did it again, at least Serena & Calem are decent names but I liked Yvonne & Xavier better.

They weren't using them at the same time as Hilbert and Hilda. And what's the point of making the rival look different from the default look if they're supposed to be the same character?

It is a placeholder name. The Japanese use the basic names "X" and "Y" for the screenshots that "Xavier" is in for ours. This includes the battle screen that has "Yvonne" and the table scene.

If you go on the official site, it seems that the protagonist and Calem/Serena have different sections, and it talks about them like seperate entities. One pair is your neighbour and the other is you. While it doesn't specifically mention Xavier/Yvonne, current screenshots use both pairs of names, and the big difference between this and Whitlea/Blair is that the names were never used side by side.

The only reason that Calem/Serena is in a different section to the Hero is because they need some way to show there's still a rival.

As it is, it's likely there is no default name - IIRC correctly, BW didn't have them, nor did BW2.

Even in the latest lot to be uploaded, players are called Xavier/Yvonne, and none of the screens show the player as Calem/Selena.
