Just whichever design I like more. There's usually one I vastly prefer over the other(Only exception I can think of is FRLG in which I'm barely drawn to either. Picked female first though for some reason.) If I get both versions, I use the other one in the second version I play. It also helps if I have a name in mind and for what gender. I don't like reusing names or using my own name. I like to feel like a different character in each playthrough.
X and Y are making this a bit difficult because the designs aren't set, but I've had it in mind to name my character Twyla since I saw the initial designs, so I'm probably going lady.

I'm mostly hetero btw. Dunno why I'm talking about this.
