A split evolution would be interesting. I sort of doubt Pikachu itself will gain Fairy type though. Pretty big change for such an iconic character.

Wouldn't surprise me, they changed jigglypuff's type afterall and he's pretty much one of the series mascots in japan, even today. (why do you suppose he's in every smash bros game?)

Because it was a popular recurring character in the anime when SSB first came out and they kept it in the series as the original 12. Still nowhere close to as popular and well known as Pikachu.

He's not on the same level as Pikachu, though. It makes sense for a Jigglypuff to get altered like it has been because it makes Fairy type's introduction seem even bigger.

Pikachu is never going to evolve in the anime and changing his type seems like a really weird decision to make at this point. A split evo would be great, but I can't see it happening.
