Gold:
Only 251 Pokemon
Physical/Special split based solely on types
Weaker Kanto Gym Leaders
Weaker Red

Heart Gold:
493 Pokemon are available (some of them are even available pre-E4, you can also trade others over from D/P/Pt)
Johto gym leaders have slightly gone up in level as well as some getting complete roster changes.
Kanto leaders are much stronger this time around
Red is also stronger this time around
More areas to explore
The Gym Leaders are rematch-able
Elite-4 round two
Physical/Special split is no longer based solely on type

I liked gold better because there were less shitty HM obstacles if I remember correctly. The gameplay overall feels better. Heart gold feels slower and more tedious.

Honestly, just go for Heartgold. It's everything Gold was, plus more. A lot of game mechanics were still just being awkwardly implemented at the time of the original. The game plays a lot more logically in the newer remake.

Crystal was my favourite game for how huge is was back then.

Sorry I don't enjoy Gen infested with legendaries, pre-evos, evos and other shit with inbalanced stats. Fucking first grass Pokemon with 120 base Atk. Fucking five copies of Mew. Fucking ugly Magmortars and Happinys.

What. There's nothing wrong with Platinum. It's significantly faster than DP and there's better Pokedex. Also, Battle Frontier. If you have problems with evil team whopping your pathetic ass, get Garchomp with Earthquake after 4th badge.
