Considering that the dex is split into three, I have the feeling that Kalos is actually pretty massive.

The size of buildings/cities on the map is irrelevant; they're not drawn to scale, never have been, and they wag they're drawn us considerably less realistic than they were pre-Unova. I think that's primarily to avoid giving too much away early on from just glancing at the map.

That sounds like it's probably just the mechanic from B2/W2 where the Pokédex had the thing with the Pokémon in the tall grass, the Pokémon you get by surfing, and the Pokémon you get by fishing.
