The vast majority of them left sometime during AG, which made way for the girl afterwards (Dawn) to become popular herself. It helped that Piplup and her were pushed pretty hard for Piplup's merchandising purposes, but not having a solid shipping subplot concerning her like Pokeshipping and Contestshipping gave fanboys less vested interest in her character. Fuck I'd imagine, like, 95% of Misty fans back in the day were Pokeshippers themselves. That was genuinely her contests, something aside from gym badges that kept people interested in the story. May's fans were never as bad or numerous, as I recall; probably because the first half of AG in the fandom consisted of people complaining about wanting Misty back.
